The Baltimore Law School Attorney Vs. A Waco, Texas Deputy Sheriff
The lawyer was visiting in Waco, and he makes the mistake of running a
stop sign. A sheriff's deputy pulls him over "You made a rolling stop
at that stop sign, Your license and registration, please." Well, now
this smart Eastern Lawyer thought that surely he could handle this Texas
cop.
The deputy smiled and repeated himself, "your license and registration,
please".
The Lawyer: "What for?"
Deputy: "You didn't come to a complete stop at that stop sign.."
Lawyer: "I slowed down, and no one was coming,"
Deputy: "You still didn't come to a complete stop. License and
registration, please."
Lawyer: "What's the difference?"
Deputy: The difference is, you have to come to a complete stop, that's
the law. License and registration, please."
Lawyer: "If you can show me the legal difference between "slow down"
and "stop," I'll give you my license and registration; and you give me a
ticket. If not, you let me go and don't give me a ticket."
Deputy: "That sounds fair. Exit your vehicle, sir."
At this point, the deputy takes out his nightstick and starts beating the
ever-loving daylights out of the lawyer and says, "Do you want me to
stop or shall I just slow down?"
LESSON: If you are a smart Baltimore lawyer, don't mess with Texas -
come to a complete whoa at the stop signs.
I thought there might be a few law abiding folks out there that would
appreciate this Waco definition.
